Drama
Drama at Scotch is divided into two complementary areas. The first involves drama taught in the daily academic curriculum and the second is the co-curricular theatre productions program. The academic program teaches drama to all boys in Years 7 and 8 and offers electives at Years 9 and 10, followed by VCE Units 1-4 at Years 11 and 12. All classes in the academic program culminate in their own public performance that showcases work achieved during the semester.Ìý

The Co-curricular theatre program offers performance experience to all levels in the Senior School through the Junior Secondary Production (Years 7 and 8),ÌýThe Middle Secondary ProductionÌý(Years 9 and 10) and twoÌýSenior Secondary ProductionsÌý(Years 11 and 12). All of these productions are staged in conjunction with students from neighbouring girls schools, including PLC, Burwood and Ruyton Girls School, Kew. The plays vary from year to yearÌýin style ranging from musical comedy to Shakespearean tragedy.Ìý

The Drama Department is housed in the James Forbes Academy, a modern, purpose-built drama teaching facility. Productions are staged there in the magnificent Geoffrey McComas Theatre, a 434 seat auditorium with proscenium and thrust stage, fly tower, orchestra pit, control rooms and stores. Central to our philosophy and practice is the principal that all productions should be exclusively acted and crewed by current students. It is fundamental to our activities that staff work alongside students and empower them to take practical control of all production roles in a safe, challenging and enjoyable environment.
